Umpire halts Naomi Osaka match after influencers disrupt seating area

摘要

A chair umpire stopped play during Naomi Osaka's match at the U.S. Open after a group of influencers in a suite were recorded using bright lights and filming, prompting the USTA to comment on the infrequency of such incidents.

Chair umpire Kader Nouni interrupted play during Naomi Osaka's second-round match against Anastasia Zakharova at Arthur Ashe Stadium after a group of influencers in a luxury suite were seen filming with a bright ring light. A video of the incident circulated online, showing a woman using the light to capture content while spectators below expressed frustration.

USTA spokesperson Brendan McIntyre told reporters that such disruptions are "infrequent" and that officials have the authority to address them when they occur. "We want our fans and guests to have an incredible time when they attend the US Open, but we also need to ensure that does not interfere with the action and competition on the court," he said.

The tournament has increased media credentials for content creators, issuing close to 100 this year, up from 54 in 2025. Player Jessica Pegula acknowledged the presence of influencers, noting that while she appreciates the exposure they bring, the use of selfie lights and filming can be distracting for athletes. "People are down there trying to perform, and it’s their career and their job. It seems a bit disrespectful," she said.

Some fans have voiced criticism, suggesting that the focus on social media content detracts from the sport itself.
