Raiders name Kirk Cousins starting quarterback
Head coach Klint Kubiak announced Kirk Cousins will start at quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, while rookie Fernando Mendoza will continue to develop.
Head coach Klint Kubiak confirmed on Wednesday that Kirk Cousins will be the Raiders' starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Cousins was given a rest day during practice, allowing rookie No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza to take reps with the first-team offense.
"Live reps are the best medicine, so that was very helpful for him," Kubiak said of Mendoza's practice time.
Kubiak praised Cousins' performance in the offseason and training camp, stating the veteran earned the role. He added that competition among the three quarterbacks – Cousins, Aiden O’Connell and Mendoza – has improved each player and strengthened the roster.
The Raiders are scheduled to open the 2026 season against the Miami Dolphins on September 13.
