Evan Rachel Wood says original Practical Magic cast did not contact her about sequel

Résumé

Evan Rachel Wood revealed she was not invited to reprise her role in Practical Magic 2, while newcomer Joey King was the only person to reach out.

Evan Rachel Wood disclosed on Instagram that none of the cast or crew from the 1998 film Practical Magic contacted her about returning for the sequel, Practical Magic 2. The role of her character Kylie will be played by Joey King, who Wood said was the only person to reach out to her.

"I really appreciated Joey King reaching out to me because no one who worked on the original film did. She's a sweetheart," Wood wrote.

King told The Hollywood Reporter at the Los Angeles premiere that she had a "lovely" conversation with Wood and expressed gratitude for Wood's support. The sequel recasts several roles: Maisie Williams replaces Alexandra Artrip as Antonia Owens, and King takes over Kylie.

Director Susanne Bier explained to Variety that the decision to recast was not personal, noting that the story now focuses on characters who are recent college graduates, which required new actors.

Wood previously told Entertainment Tonight that she felt "sad" about not being asked back, citing the bond she formed with the original cast as a child and her belief that the book adaptation would have justified her return.
