Packers' three players face uncertain futures despite making initial 53-man roster
Three Green Bay Packers players—offensive tackle Travis Glover, long snapper Matt Orzech and tight end Josh Whyle—remain on the roster bubble as the team finalizes its lineup before Week 1.
The Green Bay Packers announced their initial 53-man roster, but three players who made the cut could still be released before the regular season begins. Offensive tackle Travis Glover, who earned a spot by outperforming veteran Darian Kinnard during preseason, is listed as the team's tenth offensive lineman and may be the first to be moved if the Packers need to add depth at edge rush or address other positional needs. Long snapper Matt Orzech, a seventh-year veteran, returned after a calf injury and replaced rookie Cal Adomitis, but the team could reconsider if rookie kicker Trey Smack struggles in practice before Week 1. Tight end Josh Whyle, who secured a roster spot after the Packers traded for Rams tight end Mark Redman, may be vulnerable if the team decides to carry only three tight ends, given Redman's recent acquisition and the draft capital invested in the trade.
"We respect and trust Orzech to get the job done," the team noted after re-signing him.
"If Smack has a disastrous week or so of practice before Week 1, we could retrieve Adomitis," the organization indicated.
"Whyle has three seasons of experience, but Redman provides the blocking and athleticism the roster was missing," Packers officials said.
