LIV Golf Faces Layoffs and Potential Bankruptcy as It Seeks New Investment

Résumé

LIV Golf announced staff layoffs and the cancellation of its final 2026 event, while exploring Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a possible investment from BC Partners to restructure the organization.

LIV Golf sent a mass email to its mailing list announcing the end of its 2026 season after the organization cancelled the scheduled team championship in Plymouth, Michigan. The player and team championships were instead concluded in Indianapolis with reduced entertainment and lower player bonuses. In the week preceding the email, LIV Golf laid off a majority of its staff, stating in a Golf Digest interview that many employees’ contracts with "LIV 1.0" had ended.

The email invited recipients to "stay tuned for more LIV Golf" without providing details about future activities. A spokesperson for the company said the remaining staff are working toward a "LIV 2.0" version of the tour.

CEO Scott O'Neill has said a new investor, alternative-investment firm BC Partners, is in talks to replace the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which recently withdrew its backing. The investment is contingent on securing commitments from high-profile players. Financial-times reporting indicates LIV Golf may file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as early as this week to restructure its finances, including large obligations to player contracts and prize money.

The organization reportedly offered settlements to players that are significantly lower than the original contract values. The case of Jon Rahm, who signed a contract reported at $300 million, was cited as an example of a reduced future schedule and compensation. LIV Golf also faces multiple lawsuits from former vendors for unpaid services and may encounter legal challenges from players in bankruptcy court.

BC Partners is evaluating the situation with the aim of restructuring the tour, though the outcome depends on the resolution of existing liabilities and the ability to attract sufficient player participation.
