HBO releases new trailer for its Harry Potter TV adaptation

Summary

HBO unveiled a trailer for its upcoming eight-episode Harry Potter series, starring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry and featuring a full cast that includes John Lithgow and Janet McTeer. The first season will adapt the first novel and is slated for a Christmas release, with a second season already ordered.

HBO has released a new trailer for its planned eight-episode adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The preview shows newcomer Dominic McLaughlin as the 11-year-old wizard arriving at Hogwarts with Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The trio is sorted into Gryffindor and encounters familiar staff members, including Albus Dumbledley, Severus Snape, Minerva McGonagall and Rubeus Hagrid, while attending classes such as herbology and potions and trying Quidditch.

The trailer also highlights plot elements from the first book, such as the search for the Philosopher’s Stone, a confrontation with a mountain troll, a magical chess game and the use of the Invisibility Cloak and Mirror of Erised. HBO plans to adapt each of the seven novels into separate seasons, with the inaugural season covering "The Sorcerer’s Stone" and scheduled to debut at Christmas. A renewal for a second season, which will cover "The Chamber of Secrets," was confirmed in May.

The series features John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid and a supporting cast that includes Luke Thallon, Paul Whitehouse, Bertie Carvel and Johnny Flynn. Newcomers such as Lox Pratt (Draco Malfoy), Leo Earley (Seamus Finnigan), Rory Wilmot (Neville Longbottom), Gracie Cochrane (Ginny Weasley) and Elijah Oshin (Dean Thomas) also appear.

"The first-look image released on March 24 showed McLaughlin in Gryffindor robes walking toward the Quidditch pitch," the studio noted, adding that the full trailer expands on the visual designs for key characters.

The trailer is now available for viewing online.
