HBO releases extended trailer for new Harry Potter series

Summary

HBO unveiled a longer trailer for its eight-episode adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, confirming a Christmas debut and a cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry.

HBO has issued an extended trailer for its upcoming eight-episode adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, offering a broader look at Hogwarts life and key scenes from the novel. The footage shows Harry, played by newcomer Dominic McLaughlin, using the invisibility cloak, playing Quidditch and confronting Professor Snare.

The series also casts Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, selected after a nationwide search of British child actors aged nine to 11. Veteran performers include Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Additional roles feature Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley and Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley.

Production began in Hertfordshire last July under the direction of Mark Mylod and the writing of Francesca Gardiner, both alumni of the series Succession. The show is slated to launch at Christmas, with future seasons planned to adapt the remaining books.

"It upsets me when people are vehemently opposed to me having anything to do with this," said John Lithgow, who praised the original books for their themes of kindness and acceptance.

"I strongly disagree with JK Rowling’s views on gender," actress Bel Powley told the Telegraph, emphasizing her support for the trans community.

J.K. Rowling is involved in an advisory capacity as an executive producer.
