Patriots use video-board illusion to distract opposing field-goal kickers

Resumen

New England’s home stadium displays a reversed view of the goalposts on the video board during opponents' field-goal attempts, creating an optical illusion that may hinder kickers.

At Gillette Stadium, the video board shows a mirrored image of the goal-post area when a visiting team lines up for a field-goal attempt. The reversed view creates four yellow lines on the posts and makes the wind-flag movement appear opposite to the real flags, potentially confusing the kicker's aim.

Analytics specialist Ryan Paganetti, who has worked with several NFL teams, identified the tactic after reviewing more than a decade of Patriots home-game broadcasts. He noted that the illusion appeared in every one of the 52 Patriots field-goal attempts he examined, while it never showed on the board facing the kicker.

Paganetti said the Patriots’ staff likely adopted the method as part of their broader focus on minute competitive advantages. He added that attempts to replicate the effect at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field were ineffective because of the stadium’s video-board placement.
