Bill Simmons admits to using proxy bets on FanDuel and apologizes on his podcast

Résumé

Podcast host Bill Simmons said he placed sports wagers through his daughter’s boyfriend in Massachusetts while in California, violating proxy-betting rules, and FanDuel and the Massachusetts Gaming Commission have responded.

Bill Simmons, the host of a popular sports podcast and head of talk content at Spotify, told listeners that he used his daughter’s boyfriend to place sports bets on FanDuel in Massachusetts because he was in Los Angeles, where online wagering is prohibited. Simmons said he was unaware that proxy betting violated regulations and that the bets have been voided.

"I talked about how I got my daughter’s boyfriend to place some bets for me in Massachusetts because I was in L.A. I did not know about the proxy rules," Simmons said.

FanDuel said it acted in accordance with its terms and Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) rules, reporting the incident to the commission, voiding the wagers and taking action on the account. A spokesperson for the MGC confirmed that staff are reviewing the matter.

"The Commission is aware of the comments made on the Bill Simmons Podcast and staff are currently reviewing the matter," said Thomas Mills, a spokesperson for the commission.

The investigation’s outcome remains uncertain, but Simmons expressed remorse and indicated he will move forward.
