Evan Rachel Wood Says No One from Original 'Practical Magic' Contacted Her About Sequel

Evan Rachel Wood said she received no outreach from any of her former co-stars about the upcoming sequel to the 1998 film "Practical Magic," but actress Joey King, who is replacing Wood in the role of Kylie Owens, called her to offer support. Wood posted the comment on an Instagram story, thanking King for the gesture.

Director Susanne Bier explained at the sequel's premiere that the recasting was driven by the story's focus on characters who are just out of college, not by personal issues. "It was not a personal thing. It was that the kids in the story are right out of college, and so it wasn’t really a question, you know? We had to recast," Bier told Variety.

The sequel, scheduled for release on September 10, will feature King as the eldest daughter of Sandra Bullock's character. The film adapts Alice Hoffman's "The Book of Magic," while the original was based on her novel "Practical Magic." Writer Akiva Goldsman returns, joined by Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel.

Wood told Entertainment Tonight that the adaptation appears to diverge from the source material and that she believes her character could have been included under a different approach. "I think, in the book, it would have made sense to bring me back. I think in the way they’re approaching it, the way they’re doing it, it didn’t make sense," she said.

Former cast member Alexandra Artrip, who played Antonia Owens in the original, expressed support for Wood on Instagram, praising her bravery and noting their brief time together on set. Artrip, now retired, will be replaced by Maisie Williams in the sequel and has launched a campaign to attend the premiere, though it is unclear whether she has been invited.
