Germany attributes attempted Leipzig airport drone attack to Russia and orders consulate closure

Résumé

German officials said evidence links a drone bomb plot at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russian state actors, prompting the closure of Russia's Bonn consulate and additional sanctions measures.

German authorities announced on Tuesday that a drone carrying explosives, discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Aug. 4, was linked to Russian state involvement. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said the device’s configuration, components and detonator matched those used in previous Russian hybrid operations, indicating a high level of technical expertise but execution by low-level operatives. He added that intelligence points to individuals acting on behalf of Russian state entities, though no specific agency was named.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the incident would lead to the closure of Russia’s consulate in Bonn on Sept. 18 and the eventual shutdown of the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin. He also said Germany would seek to add more Russian individuals to EU sanctions lists, tighten entry controls for Russian nationals and increase pressure on the “shadow fleet” of tankers suspected of violating oil sanctions.

The Russian ambassador was summoned to Berlin’s foreign ministry. In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called the allegations a “far-fetched and contrived pretext” and said no convincing evidence had been presented. President Vladimir Putin dismissed the claims, suggesting the proof had been planted to distract from domestic issues.

The Leipzig incident follows a series of sabotage attempts across Europe that Western officials attribute to Russia since the invasion of Ukraine, including an incendiary device that ignited a freight container at the same airport earlier in 2024. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed solidarity with Germany, and the EU is preparing additional sanctions as foreign ministers convene in Ireland.
