Jury in Lindsay Clancy murder trial to resume deliberations Wednesday after deadlock

摘要

A Massachusetts jury paused deliberations on the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy and will reconvene Wednesday, as the judge urged continued discussion despite a lack of unanimity.

Jurors in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the 36-year-old mother accused of strangling her three children in 2023, were sent home Tuesday night and instructed to resume deliberations Wednesday morning. The panel, composed of nine women and three men, had earlier reported a deadlock, prompting Judge William Sullivan to remind them of the case’s complexity – more than 80 witnesses and 300 exhibits – and to continue their work.

Sullivan told the jury, "After many hours of deliberation, we are unable to come to a unanimous decision. I brought you back out because I know this was a long trial… I am asking you to go back out, keeping in mind all of the instructions I gave you, to continue your deliberations at this time."

Retired Judge Jim Barretto, commenting on the proceedings, said the continued discussion suggests the deadlock is likely due to one or two jurors rather than an even split, and that a majority appears inclined toward a verdict. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington described the ongoing deliberations as "very encouraging."

Clancy faces three murder charges and a possible verdict of not criminally responsible, based on a defense of postpartum psychosis. The prosecution must overcome this insanity defense, and the verdict slip includes a "not guilty" option. Both sides have presented extensive expert testimony on Clancy’s mental state, including forensic psychiatrists who described her as psychotic at the time of the killings.

The case, which began on July 20, has drawn attention to mental-health issues and the burden of proof required to establish criminal responsibility. The jury’s decision is expected after further deliberations.
