First-round NFL rookies receive mixed preseason grades ahead of Week 1
Analysts graded all 32 first-round picks after the preseason, highlighting strong performances from running back Jeremiyah Love and several defensive players, while others saw limited action or struggled.
The NFL preseason has ended, leaving teams only a few days from the regular-season opener. Analysts evaluated every first-round rookie based on snap counts and on-field results. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza (Raiders) earned a C+ after 85 snaps, facing pressure on 19 of 51 dropbacks and showing rawness that may improve with experience. Edge rusher David Bailey (20 snaps) received a B+ for displaying the speed and flexibility that made him the No. 2 overall pick.
Running back Jeremiyah Love (23 snaps) was graded A-, praised for his technique and a highlight-reel hurdle, and is expected to be healthy after an ankle injury. Wide receiver Carnell Tate (35 snaps) earned a C after failing to complete any of his six targets and struggling to create separation. Linebacker Arvell Reese (22 snaps) received a B for solid sideline-to-sideline play, while cornerback Mansoor Delane (14 snaps) was given a B+ for aggressive run support and comfort in zone coverage.
Several first-round picks saw little or no preseason action. Saints rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson missed the entire preseason with a hamstring injury, and Jets tight end Kenyon Sadiq underwent hernia surgery, leaving both on the inactive list. Other notable grades include offensive tackle Monroe Freeling (A-), offensive guard Francis Mauigoa (B+), and defensive end Malachi Lawrence (B). The analysis also noted that some players, such as New England’s Caleb Lomu (C+), logged high snap totals but are unlikely to start immediately.
Overall, the grades suggest a varied readiness level among the 2026 first-round class, with a few standouts poised to contribute from Week 1 and several others still needing development.
