House passes resolution denouncing socialism with bipartisan support

सारांश

The House approved a resolution condemning socialism, with eight Democrats joining Republicans, while also reaffirming support for the SAVE America voting-rights bill.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 220-192-2 on Tuesday to adopt a resolution that denounces socialism in all its forms. Eight Democratic members joined the Republican majority, and two Democrats voted present. The resolution also reaffirmed backing for the SAVE America Act, a voting-rights measure that has stalled in the Senate.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said the measure also opposes “the idea of people that aren't American citizens voting in our elections,” referencing the Democratic Socialists of America. Democratic leaders highlighted that a separate resolution without the SAVE America language had been proposed.

"We're capitalists. We believe in a capitalist system and rules and laws," Rep. Pete Aguilar said, adding that Republicans were using the resolution to promote the SAVE Act.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced he would vote against the resolution, criticizing the inclusion of the SAVE America Act and describing it as a priority of “far-right extremists.”

The vote came after recent Democratic primary victories by candidates identified with democratic socialism, prompting GOP leaders to schedule the measure ahead of the November elections.
