Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. says contract talks could affect Week One appearance

Resumen

Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. indicated that without a new contract before the season, his participation in the Steelers' opening game remains uncertain.

Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. said his lack of a new contract could determine whether he plays in the team's Week One matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on September 13. The rookie, who was recently activated from the physically unable to perform list, told reporters he would need to discuss the situation with team officials and his agents before deciding.

"I don’t know. I would have to talk to the guys upstairs and my agents about that one," Porter said.

Porter participated in a walk-through practice but emphasized that his involvement in that session does not guarantee a role in the season opener. He added that he and the coaching staff are taking a day-by-day approach to his recovery.

"I really can’t speak too much to the future, but today I was out there, running with the guys, still trying to get back fully, but we’re going to try to take it day by day for the most part, and that’s the same page me and coach have been on so far," he said.

The player acknowledged that contract negotiations have been challenging but said he feels supported by teammates and coaches. The Steelers have stated they will not engage in contract talks during the regular season, leaving less than two weeks to reach an agreement before the opening game.
