Germany attributes Leipzig drone incident to Russia and announces diplomatic retaliation

Résumé

Germany says Russian forces were behind an August drone attack at Leipzig-Halle Airport and will close Russia's Bonn consulate, tighten entry rules and seek new EU sanctions.

Berlin said the August 4 incident at Leipzig-Halle Airport, in which three drones – two loaded with explosives – were detected, was a Russian-linked hybrid attack. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt identified the drone technology, explosives and cyber components as consistent with previous Russian operations against Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul outlined a set of countermeasures, including the closure of Russia’s consulate in Bonn on September 18, tighter entry controls for Russian nationals and the termination of the agreement governing the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin, which is suspected of espionage activities. He said Germany will also propose new EU sanctions aimed at individuals involved in hybrid attacks and push for stronger actions against Russia’s shadow fleet.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen indicated that EU foreign ministers, meeting in Ireland, will prepare additional sanctions. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot warned that confirmed gravity of the events would lead to further consequences for Russia. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg (note: correct name is Jens Stoltenberg) expressed full solidarity with Germany and welcomed the announced measures.
