Cowboys Release Backup QB Joe Milton, Sam Howell Named New Backup
The Dallas Cowboys waived quarterback Joe Milton, promoting Sam Howell to the backup role behind Dak Prescott, while Milton is expected to attract interest from teams needing depth at the position.
The Dallas Cowboys have waived former sixth-round pick Joe Milton, who had been on the 53-man roster after being acquired in a trade last offseason. The move clears the way for Sam Howell, a former fifth-round selection, to serve as Dak Prescott's backup quarterback.
Milton, 26, appeared in five games over the past two seasons, recording 424 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He began his NFL career with the New England Patriots in 2024 but saw limited action, later spending a season as Prescott's backup with the Cowboys.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised Milton's development, noting his improved decision-making and ability to read multiple progressions. Despite the commendation, the organization decided Howell was a better fit behind Prescott after Howell posted a full season as the Washington Commanders' starter, accumulating 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
Milton is expected to remain unsigned this season, though several teams with limited quarterback depth have been mentioned as potential destinations. The Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans and New York Jets are among those cited as possible landing spots, each facing questions about their secondary quarterback options.
