San Francisco 49ers announce 53-man roster ahead of season opener
The San Francisco 49ers released their final 53-player roster, confirming quarterback Kurtis Rourke, running back Kaelon Black and several special-team contributors among the cuts and signings.
San Francisco released its 53-man roster for the upcoming NFL season. Quarterbacks Brock Purdy, Mac Jones and Kurtis Rourke made the list, with Rourke cleared to play after a health assessment. The running back group includes Christian McCaffrey, Kaelon Black, Jordan James and Kyle Juszczyk, following Isaac Guerendo’s placement on the physically unable-to-perform list.
Wide receivers Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, De’Zhaun Stribling, Jacob Cowing, Demarcus Robinson and Jordan Watkins were retained, with Cowing earning his spot after an 83-yard punt return in the preseason finale. Tight ends George Kittle, Luke Farrell, Jake Tonges and Brayden Willis also remain on the roster; Kittle is expected to be active for Week 1.
The offensive line features Trent Williams, Carver Willis, Jake Brendel, Dominick Puni, Colton McKivitz, Jarrett Patterson, Vederian Lowe, Enrique Cruz Jr. and Connor Colby. Patterson, a former Niners practice-squad player, is viewed as depth with potential to start if needed.
Defensive line selections include Nick Bosa, Osa Odighizuwa and seven additional players, while the linebacker unit retains Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Jaden Dugger, Luke Gifford, Tatum Bethune, Garret Wallow and Nick Martin, despite recent injury concerns for Martin and Gifford.
Cornerbacks Renardo Green, Deommodore Lenoir, Upton Stout, Jack Jones, Ephesians Prysock, Nate Hobbs and Siran Neal were named starters, and safeties Ji’Ayir Brown, Marques Sigle and Malik Mustapha completed the defensive backfield. Ashtyn Davis was released.
Special teams retain punter Eddy Pineiro; punter Corliss Waitman and long snapper Jon Weeks were waived with the expectation they will re-sign shortly, a procedural move used previously by the club.
"Kittle is still in line to play in Week 1," a team spokesperson confirmed.
The roster is subject to change as the team finalizes practice-squad assignments and addresses injury designations before the regular season begins.
