Ridley Scott's 'The Dog Stars' Opens to $8 Million, While 'Spider-Man' Remains Box Office Leader
'The Dog Stars' earned $8 million in its opening weekend, placing fifth, as Sony's 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' continued to dominate the domestic box office.
Disney and 20th Century released the post-apocalyptic thriller "The Dog Stars" on 3,330 screens, generating $8 million in its opening weekend and finishing fifth at the domestic box office. The film, produced on a budget exceeding $80 million, holds a 40 % rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received a "C+" from CinemaScore polls.
"The Dog Stars" is expected to lose tens of millions over its theatrical run, marking one of director Ridley Scott's lowest-performing releases.
The opening performance mirrors Scott's 2021 film "The Last Duel," which opened to $4.7 million against a roughly $100 million budget. By contrast, Scott's earlier successes include "The Martian," which grossed $630 million worldwide in 2015.
In the same weekend, Sony's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" topped the box office with $22.2 million, a 44 % decline from the previous week, bringing its domestic total to $891 million. The film is approaching the record for highest domestic gross, currently held by 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," and could become the first North American release to reach $1 billion.
Universal's "The Odyssey" held second place with $14.6 million, while the horror sequel "Insidious: Out of the Further" earned $10.1 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $43 million.
Other releases included "Coyote vs. Acme," which debuted in third place with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,575 screens.
