Israeli settlers seize home in West Bank village amid clashes with security forces

Résumé

Settlers entered the Palestinian village of Qusra, seized a house while its owner was inside and clashed with Israeli troops, who said they used proportionate force; no arrests had been announced by Sunday.

Israeli settlers entered the West Bank village of Qusra on Saturday afternoon, surrounding the home of resident Louay Adli and throwing stones at the building. Adli said the crowd grew to 60 or 70 people and that the Israeli army arrived from the front while settlers approached from behind, firing tear gas but not intervening directly.

Adli and six others fled to the roof to escape suffocation, after which he was detained, blindfolded and warned not to return to his house. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement saying security forces identified dozens of rioters who had barricaded themselves inside the home and dispersed them using "various means," while also seizing three cars used in the raid.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the incident would be investigated and that authorities were working to locate those involved. Israeli President Isaac Herzog described the event as a "direct and flagrant defiance of the laws and values of the State of Israel" and called for decisive action.

In a separate incident in the nearby town of Jalud, masked settlers attacked an NBC News crew interviewing a Palestinian woman, beating the journalists with sticks. The Foreign Press Association condemned the assault, noting a pattern of violence against the press and civilians.

Palestinian activist Ayed Jafry claimed the area faces daily settler attacks and alleged coordination between the army and settlers. The IDF said troops and border police would continue operations in Qusra and Jalud to prevent further disturbances and maintain order.

Netanyahu labeled the perpetrators as a "handful of rioters" and pledged a vigorous investigation, while IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir ordered heightened military readiness in the West Bank amid rising tensions.
