Universal Hits $3 Billion International Box Office as Spider-Man Leads Weekend

Universal Studios reported that its latest releases pushed the studio past the $3 billion mark in overseas box-office revenue, the first studio to do so this year. The milestone was reached largely on the strength of Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey, which added $48.6 million internationally this weekend, bringing its global total to $1.55 billion.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained the top-grossing film worldwide for the weekend, earning $66.2 million and taking its cumulative total to $2.33 billion, the fourth-highest worldwide gross ever. The film’s fifth weekend saw $44 million from 29,000 screens across 67 markets, with China, the United Kingdom and Mexico among its strongest territories.

Nolan’s Odyssey posted a 29% decline in international earnings from the previous weekend but still generated $48.6 million in 83 territories, plus $14.3 million domestically. The film’s IMAX run contributed $24.6 million globally, with China’s IMAX venues accounting for $5.5 million. In South Korea, Odyssey overtook Spider-Man to become the highest-grossing MPA title of the year, adding $11.6 million for a cumulative $70.1 million.

Other releases included Sony’s Insidious: Out of the Further, which earned $28.8 million worldwide in its second weekend, and Disney’s Dog Stars, which opened to $19.3 million globally. Paramount’s Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie added $12.7 million to its worldwide total, reaching $124.6 million.

Universal’s achievement marks the third time since 2019 that a studio has crossed $3 billion in international box-office revenue, and the third such milestone for Universal itself.
