Man and Teen Charged With Posing as NFL Player to Defraud Women of $1.3 Million

Résumé

Federal prosecutors say a 35-year-old man and an 18-year-old accomplice pretended to be a San Francisco 49ers player and investment adviser, using fake accounts and video calls to swindle at least 26 women across the West for about $1.3 million.

Federal authorities in Oregon have charged Daejon Labrayae Love, 35, and Taylor Jamie Chan, 18, with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud after allegedly posing as a San Francisco 49ers player and a wealthy investor to cheat women in four states. Beginning in February 2022, the pair used dating apps to meet victims, claiming Love was a professional football player and real-estate mogul while Chan acted as his "investment adviser."

According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Love told women they were in genuine romantic relationships and that he was building a fortune with their help. He presented fabricated investment opportunities, showing falsified bank and portfolio screenshots via phone apps and video calls. Chan sent messages, purportedly from Love’s adviser, urging further investments, which Love then forwarded to the victims as proof of legitimacy.

When victims were unable or unwilling to provide more money, the scheme collapsed; Love would block communication and retain the funds. Financial records indicate the duo collected roughly $1.3 million from at least 26 identified victims, though the FBI believes the number could be higher. Both suspects were arrested after Chan traveled to Boise, Idaho, to meet Love, and now face federal fraud charges.
