King Haakon VIII delivered his first televised speech, honoring his late father and outlining his commitment to Norway's constitutional monarchy and democratic principles.

King Haakon VIII of Norway spoke to the nation in his inaugural televised address, paying tribute to his late father, King Harald V, and pledging to continue the country’s democratic and inclusive traditions. He described his father as a devoted family man and highlighted the collective mourning across the country, noting that many share in the grief.

Haakon said he would follow his own path while upholding the principles of Norway’s constitutional monarchy and affirmed the nation’s belief in self-governance, the rule of law and equal worth of every individual. He is scheduled to take an oath in parliament on Tuesday to formally uphold the constitution.

Earlier on Saturday, the new king met with leaders of the Church of Norway, parliament, the Supreme Court and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who had viewed the late king’s casket. Flags flew at half-mast and more than 20,000 people left flowers at the palace.

A national period of mourning has been declared, with memorial services planned across churches in Norway. The late king, who died at 89 after a long reign, was widely regarded as a symbol of an open and tolerant Norway. The royal family has faced recent personal challenges, including scrutiny of Queen Mette-Marit’s past associations and health issues.

"We believe in our system of self-governance — and in democracy. We believe in a society built on the rule of law, where every individual has equal worth," Haakon said.

Prime Minister Støre told Reuters that Haakon shares many of his father’s qualities, particularly the ability to create an atmosphere of togetherness.
