Week 0 of 2026 college football sees UNC upset TCU in Dublin and USC dominate San Jose State

Résumé

North Carolina defeated TCU 15-10 in Dublin, while USC beat San Jose State 42-26, as other Week 0 games produced mixed results across the FBS.

North Carolina opened its 2026 season with a 15-10 victory over TCU in Dublin, Ireland, marking the first time the Tar Heels led a power-conference opponent at halftime under head coach Bill Belichick. The win came despite the team’s limited offensive production.

USC continued its strong start, routing San Jose State 42-26. Quarterback Jayden Maiava completed 25 of 29 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns, while the Trojans amassed 505 total yards.

Virginia posted a 34-8 win against North Carolina State, highlighted by transfer quarterback Beau Pribula’s 155 passing yards, 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and a defense that limited the Wolfpack to 168 yards.

In the FCS, North Dakota State began its FBS debut with a 33-7 victory over Jacksonville State, gaining 373 offensive yards.

TCU’s loss left the Horned Frogs with 281 yards of offense and two red-zone turnovers, giving them a chance to address early issues before Big 12 play begins.

Florida State defeated New Mexico State 34-17, but the Seminoles never built a lead larger than 17 points, a result that has drawn scrutiny of coach Mike Norvell’s position.

The Week 0 slate also featured the FBS debuts of Sacramento State and other teams, setting the stage for the upcoming season.
