North Carolina defeats TCU 15-10 in season opener under Bill Belichick

North Carolina opened its 2024 football season with a 15-10 victory over TCU in Dublin, Ireland. The Tar Heels limited TCU to 10 points, committing only three penalties and playing disciplined special teams. Their defense forced key stops in the fourth quarter, allowing the team to preserve the lead.

The win came amid ongoing scrutiny of Belichick's transition to college coaching. Earlier offseason issues included a human-resources complaint involving former general-manager Mike Lombardi and defensive coordinator Stephen Belichick's medical leave. Despite a roster that was ranked near the bottom of the ACC preseason poll, the team executed a game plan that emphasized efficiency and error avoidance.

North Carolina's offense, led by head coach Bobby Petrino, managed 90 rushing yards on a relatively new offensive line and converted three of 11 third-down attempts. Special teams performed without major mistakes, contributing to the overall disciplined performance.

"It wasn't like I learned a new sport, like I'm coaching soccer or something," Belichick said at ACC media days. "The thing I learned the most about was just the people in the university that you build relationships with — the training staff, the academics, the people you work with in other departments, athletic directors. So it's working with everybody and trying to get things done as efficiently and quickly and productively as possible."

Analysts noted that early-season games, especially those played abroad, can be misleading indicators of long-term success, and TCU's performance was hampered by penalties and execution issues. The Tar Heels still face a challenging ACC schedule, and further assessment will depend on how the team sustains its disciplined approach throughout the season.
