NBC News crew and Palestinian woman attacked by masked settlers in West Bank village

Résumé

A NBC News team and a Palestinian woman were assaulted by masked individuals in Jalud, West Bank, prompting medical treatment for several victims and statements from Israeli security forces and the prime minister.

A NBC News crew was interviewing Aida Ahmed Abdullah and her family in the West Bank town of Jalud near Nablus on Saturday when a vehicle carrying masked men drove toward them. According to the report, a man in a blue tracksuit leaned out of the rear window and, after the car stopped, four men in dark clothing leapt out, striking the interviewees with sticks and throwing rocks.

"They jumped out, beat us, then jumped back in the car," said NBC international correspondent Matt Bradley, who was hit twice in the arm and received treatment at a nearby clinic.

Abdullah, 51, was taken to a Red Crescent clinic; her injuries were described as non-life-threatening. Three other members of the NBC team – a cameraman, a producer and a driver – also sustained injuries and were treated after the incident. Producer Lawahez Jabari said the attackers carried sticks and a gun, though the gun was not used.

The assault occurred amid a series of violent incidents in the area, including reports of masked settlers using pepper spray and throwing rocks at Palestinian workers in nearby Qusra. Israeli security forces said they responded to reports of “rioters” and confiscated vehicles believed to have been used in the attack. The forces added that they continued operations in Qusra and Jalud to restore order.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement condemning the “criminal acts of violence” in the villages, describing the perpetrators as a “handful of rioters” and saying they harm Israel’s standing. The incident adds to a pattern of settler-related violence in the West Bank, where United Nations data show 76 Palestinians and three Israelis were killed between January 1 and July 24.
