Broncos evaluate five preseason standouts as roster decisions loom
Denver head coach Sean Payton must trim the roster after a dominant preseason win, with several players highlighted for potential active spots.
Denver defeated the Minnesota Vikings 34-6 in the final preseason game, giving head coach Sean Payton a range of performances to consider for the 53-man roster and practice squad. Running back Cody Schrader recorded more than 100 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown, showcasing versatility as a runner, receiver and blocker. Inside linebacker Red Murdock contributed four tackles and forced a fumble, while fellow rookie Taurean York also produced notable plays, prompting speculation about which linebacker will secure a roster spot. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger completed 15 of 20 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns, demonstrating his ability to serve as a backup option. Tight end Justin Joly caught an 88-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, reinforcing his case as a depth player at the position. Return specialist Kolbe Katsis added a 48-yard kick return and two punt returns for 31 yards, improving field position for the Broncos. The coaching staff will decide which of these contributors earn active roles and which may be placed on the practice squad.
"We have a lot of talent competing for limited spots, and performances like these help us make informed decisions," a Broncos spokesperson said.
