Chiefs and Seahawks finish preseason game in 9-9 tie, rookies draw attention

Summary

Kansas City and Seattle ended their third preseason matchup at 9-9, with notable performances from rookie defensive players, running back Brashard Smith, receiver Andrew Armstrong and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

Kansas City and Seattle concluded their final preseason game on Friday night in a 9-9 tie. The contest highlighted several emerging players for the Chiefs.

Defensive rookies received particular notice. Cornerback Mansoor Delane, who entered the game with the starters, recorded a tackle for loss and was praised for his speed to the point of contact. Defensive end R. Mason Thomas also impressed coaches with his quick first step and ability to bend around the edge, a skill set compared to former pass rusher Frank Clark.

Running back Brashard Smith and wide receiver Andrew Armstrong each saw significant playing time. Smith returned a kickoff 57 yards and led the team with 72 rushing yards on 16 attempts, while Armstrong topped the receiving list with five catches for 54 yards.

Rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier started and completed 22 of 34 passes for 198 yards, throwing one interception. He moved the ball effectively at times, including a notable throw on third-and-12 late in the game, but was unable to reach the end zone, resulting in three field-goal attempts from inside the 10-yard line.

The performances suggest the Chiefs have several young players who could compete for roster spots as the regular season approaches.
