Tony Romo faces additional citations after July DUI arrest

Resumen

Former NFL quarterback and CBS analyst Tony Romo has been charged with three new citations related to his July 23 arrest for suspected DUI, while CBS has not set a timeline for his return.

Tony Romo, 46, was arrested on July 23 in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence. On Thursday, prosecutors added citations for possessing open intoxicants in a vehicle, unsafe passing on the right and a first-offense operating-while-intoxicated charge; he had already received a citation for refusing a sobriety test.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office said Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests after a traffic stop on Interstate 43, and an open bottle of alcohol was found in the passenger area of his Jeep. Body-camera footage released earlier this week showed Romo telling deputies he was coming from a golf course and heading to visit his grandparents, while an officer noted red, glassy eyes and the smell of alcohol.

CBS Sports president David Berson said the network has not set a timeline for deciding Romo’s future with the broadcaster. In Romo’s absence, analyst JJ Watt will join play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS’s lead NFL broadcast team, beginning with the September 13 game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers.

"Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved," a Romo spokesperson said in a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and TMZ.

Romo, a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback who played his entire career with the team from 2004 to 2016, has been CBS’s lead NFL analyst since 2017. He remains the Cowboys’ franchise leader in career touchdown passes.
