Take-Two subpoenas leak source as Cyberleek releases limited Grand Theft Auto VI footage
Take-Two Interactive has subpoenaed major tech firms in an effort to identify the anonymous leaker known as Cyberleek, who posted a series of short Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay clips before going silent.
Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, filed subpoenas against Microsoft, Discord, Google and X Corp. on Aug. 20, citing "stolen content" in an attempt to uncover the identity of an anonymous source that has been sharing short Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay videos under the name Cyberleek. The legal actions suggest that at least some of the leaked footage is authentic.
Since late August, Cyberleek has posted 16 video clips and three map screenshots that show various in-game locations, mini-games and brief cutscenes. Highlights include a cropped view of Dalton Island, a full-map screenshot, a basketball mini-game, several driving sequences, and the first on-screen appearance of a second playable character, Lucia Caminos, who is introduced in a four-minute prologue clip.
The leaker also ran polls on a website that accepted cryptocurrency payments to decide which content to release next. After delivering a short cutscene featuring Caminos, the source stopped posting new material. The associated crypto token reportedly lost most of its value after cashing out roughly $250,000.
Rockstar later released an official 26-minute trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix, which includes additional details not shown in the leaked clips. Analysts note that the trailer provides a more comprehensive view of the game’s mechanics and setting than the fragmented leaks.
The investigation remains ongoing as Take-Two continues its effort to identify the individual or group behind the Cyberleek uploads.
