US Public Opinion Remains Low on Trump’s Iran War After Six Months

Resumen

Recent polls show only about a third of Americans approve of President Trump’s handling of the Iran conflict, while a federal judge questions a plan to rename the Kennedy Center after the president.

Public sentiment toward President Donald Trump’s conduct of the six-month Iran war remains largely unfavorable. Polls conducted in July by Fox News, CNBC and Reuters placed approval for his handling of the conflict between 25% and 35%, down from an earlier NBC News poll that showed 41% approval at the war’s outset. The same earlier poll found that 52% of registered voters believed the United States should not have taken military action against Iran, a view that persists, with a recent Reuters/Ipsos survey indicating 62% disapproval of the intervention.

In a separate legal matter, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper questioned the Justice Department’s position on a proposal by the Kennedy Center’s board, which voted to rename the venue “President Donald J. Trump Plaza” and add the phrase “renovated and restored by President Donald J. Trump.” The judge asked a DOJ attorney why the proposed September 8 deadline was significant and whether the name change might violate federal law.

Scientists linked the deadly June floods in Nepal to a glacier collapse driven by permafrost thaw, a process they said is increasingly likely as climate change intensifies. Wilfried Haeberli, a professor emeritus at the University of Zurich, said the probability that permafrost loss caused the event is “almost 100%.”

In Pennsylvania, a coroner reported that an infant who died shortly after birth showed evidence of measles virus in lung tissue, but it remains unclear whether the infection contributed to the death. State health officials described the case as “measles-associated,” a term indicating epidemiologic evidence of infection.
