Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez have not reached a new contract agreement ahead of season opener

NFL reports say the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez remain far from a deal, though negotiations are expected to intensify before the regular season begins.

The New England Patriots have not yet reached a new contract with cornerback Christian Gonzalez as the team prepares for its September 9 season opener. ESPN reporter Adam Schefter said on Thursday that the two sides have not been close to a deal and compared the situation to the recent extension for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, noting that the Patriots have not matched that benchmark.

"I think there's probably another push before the season begins or at the start of the season from both sides. … He's too good a player not to try to get something done," Schefter added.

Gonzalez, who is entering the final year of his current contract with a club option for 2027, is eligible for an extension. The 24-year-old, who recorded 69 tackles, 10 passes defended and a Pro Bowl selection last season, said he remains focused on the upcoming games despite the contract talks.

"It's frustrating, but I'm focused on the season. I'm focused on here now," he told reporters.

Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said during a preseason halftime interview that the organization continues to work with Gonzalez’s representatives and wants the player to remain with the team.

"Each side is trying to do what's right for them. Christian is a tremendous player that we've been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here, and that hasn't changed. We're going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done."

Gonzalez’s performance in the Patriots’ recent Super Bowl run, including an interception in the AFC Championship Game and strong coverage in the championship, underscores his value as the team heads into a Week 1 matchup against Seattle, the Seahawks’ reigning Offensive Player of the Year.
