U.S. Judge to Decide Bail for Tate Brothers Amid Extradition Fight

Résumé

Andrew and Tristan Tate argued they are not flight risks as a U.S. magistrate judge considers bail while they contest extradition to the United Kingdom on multiple sexual-crime charges.

A U.S. magistrate judge in Miami will determine whether Andrew and Tristan Tate, dual U.S.-U.K. citizens facing extradition on rape, sex-trafficking and related charges, can be released on bail. The brothers, who have denied the allegations, testified that their online personas differ from their private lives.

"If there’s any court in the world that will listen to me, it will be an American court," Andrew Tate said while on the stand.

Tristan Tate, speaking against his attorneys' advice, likened his and his brother’s online characters to a performance, stating, "I play a character, no more than any actor." He described his confinement in a small cell and claimed his diet consists mainly of candy and chips, calling it "death by scurvy instead of death by starvation."

Defense lawyer Howard Srebnick argued the brothers are not flight risks, noting their consistent appearances in courts in the United Kingdom and Romania, and highlighted Tristan’s responsibility for a child with special needs. He contended the defendants have been unfairly portrayed as internet monsters.

Andrew Tate’s girlfriend, Natasha Sesay, testified that the man she knows differs from his online image, describing him as a caring father.

Prosecutors in the United Kingdom opposed bail, citing statements suggesting the brothers might try to evade justice, interfere with witnesses, and obtain accusers' names for a fee. The Crown Prosecution Service declined the request to protect complainants.

The brothers also face separate criminal proceedings in Romania for alleged organized crime, human trafficking and money-laundering offenses. The bail hearing follows new charges filed in the U.K., including additional counts of rape and offenses involving indecent images of children.
