Hulu renews thriller "Furious" for a second season ahead of series finale

Résumé

The streaming service confirmed a second-season order for Liz Meriwether's drama "Furious" starring Emmy Rossum, citing growing viewership as the first season wraps on Aug. 31.

Hulu announced on Tuesday that it will produce a second season of the thriller series "Furious," created by Liz Meriwether and starring Emmy Rossum as FBI agent Alice Black. The renewal was confirmed before the first-season finale, scheduled for Aug. 31, and follows the network’s recent cancellation of another new series, "Not Suitable For Work."

The streamer said viewership for "Furious" has risen week over week, though it has not yet released official ratings. Nielsen data for the show's launch week is expected later in the day. Industry trackers report that the series, which debuted with three episodes, has entered the Top 10 for streaming originals based on total minutes viewed and has appeared regularly in Luminate’s weekly rankings, reaching as high as No. 5 with 2.43 million U.S. views during its first full week.

According to Hulu, the series is also the top-performing title on Disney+/Hulu worldwide for August and the second-most-watched freshman drama on Hulu in the United States this year, generating about 4 billion cross-media impressions. The show holds a 98 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

"Furious" follows Black’s pursuit of a calculating female serial killer, played by Lola Petticrew, as their investigations intersect and moral boundaries blur. The cast includes Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy, Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang and Steve Way. Executive producers include Meriwether, 20th Television, Searchlight Television, Rossum’s Composition 8, Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead and Sam Hoffman, with Brian Kirk directing the first two episodes.
