U.S. State Department Suspends All Immigrant Visa Applications for Training Review

Ամփոփում

The State Department has paused processing of all immigrant visa applications to conduct extensive training for consular officers, part of broader efforts to tighten immigration controls.

The U.S. State Department announced on Tuesday that it has halted processing of all immigrant visa applications at embassies and consulates worldwide. Officials said the pause allows for “in-depth training” so consular officers can evaluate each applicant more consistently and determine whether the individual might rely on public assistance. Applicants with scheduled interviews were notified that their appointments were cancelled and will be rescheduled once the training is completed. The move is described as part of a broader strategy to make the immigration system more selective.

Separately, the administration has signaled plans to revoke visas for asylum seekers who entered the United States on tourist or business visas, a step that could affect up to 200,000 people. The policy is being coordinated with the Department of Homeland Security.

Legal experts note that the pause adds another hurdle for individuals who have already navigated a complex visa process. A senior staff attorney at the National Immigration Law Center, Joanna Cuevas Ingram, said, “The court made clear that immigration laws cannot be used to justify discrimination…We are determined to ensure every person and family this ban harmed receives appropriate relief.”

The State Department has been updating guidance and training since early this year to ensure officers are equipped to assess visa applicants comprehensively.
