House Minority Leader Hakeek Jeffries said his private discussion with Jared Kushner was intended to address the U.S. affordability crisis, while facing criticism from members of his own party.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said his private meeting with Jared Kushner was arranged to discuss the "affordability crisis" affecting housing, immigration and the cost of living in the United States. Jeffries posted on X that no member of the Trump circle would receive special treatment and pledged to follow the law and the Constitution.
The meeting, which took place after a New York Times report, drew criticism from several Democratic figures. Former Obama aide Tommy Vietor questioned Kushner’s role, noting he holds no formal government position. Former Clinton strategist James Carville urged Jeffries to summon Kushner before a congressional committee instead of a private discussion, alleging back-door dealings.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he continues to support Jeffries for a potential House majority leader role if Democrats regain control in the November midterms. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said he was unaware of the meeting’s purpose and described Kushner as not being directly involved in day-to-day White House operations.
Jeffries previously said the meeting aimed to "stop the madness" and warned that extremist approaches would meet strong opposition.
