LSU allegedly recruited NFL hopefuls to file lawsuit against NCAA over eligibility

Summary

LSU is reported to have approached NFL players to join a lawsuit seeking the right to return to college football if they are cut, according to a CBS Sports report.

Lane Kiffin said LSU added three former NFL hopefuls to its roster because recent court rulings could allow the players to return to college football if they are released from NFL teams. He argued the program was simply taking advantage of the legal environment.

A CBS Sports report cited sources saying LSU actively contacted several players on NFL rosters, or their representatives, to encourage them to file a lawsuit against the NCAA that would permit them to re-enroll at LSU after being cut. The report noted that the lawsuit was filed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and that the Tigers have already added former Ole Miss tight end Dae'quan Wright, former Ole Miss defensive tackle Xzavian Harris and former Notre Dame defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka.

The move comes as NFL teams trim rosters from 90 to 53 players, leaving a pool of athletes who could be eligible to return under the Louisiana suit. The Big Ten has already barred its members from adding players who have signed NFL contracts, and the SEC is expected to adopt similar restrictions.

Kiffin told reporters that he does not feel obligated to protect current roster players from being replaced by former NFL hopefuls, emphasizing the program’s “relentless pursuit of excellence.” He said the coaching staff will consider any option that improves the team’s chances of winning.

The situation has sparked debate about the impact of such recruiting practices on college-football norms and eligibility rules.
