German authorities locate third drone and explosives at Leipzig/Halle Airport
Investigators have recovered a third drone and suspected explosive material linked to the August 4 attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport, while Chancellor Merz pledged to identify the perpetrators soon.
German investigators have discovered a third unmanned aerial vehicle and suspected explosive material near Leipzig/Halle Airport, adding to evidence from the August 4 drone incident that targeted a Ukrainian cargo plane. The findings were reported by German media on August 25.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the government will shortly disclose who it believes was responsible for the attack, emphasizing that the perpetrators will be held accountable. He warned that Germany is increasingly facing hybrid threats and noted that authorities are enhancing defenses, including the establishment of a new drone-defense centre in Magdeburg.
Security sources have reportedly suggested possible involvement of Russian intelligence, a claim that Moscow has denied. The investigation continues under intensive police work to determine the origin and intent of the devices.
