ICE releases father of sailor serving on USS Abraham Lincoln after weekend detention

Résumé

Immigration and Customs Enforcement freed Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, the father of a Navy sailor on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, following his arrest earlier in the week.

Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, a Nicaraguan national, was released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Tuesday, his family said. Aviles Roa had been detained on Saturday after federal officials determined he entered the United States without authorization, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

His son, Seaman Joshua Aviles, who is serving on the USS Abraham Lincoln, posted on social media that the arrest affected his ability to work long shifts aboard the carrier, which has been noted for extended deployments and reports of morale challenges.

"I don't know how I can mentally continue working 12+ hour days knowing that my dad is somewhere, possibly being treated like a criminal," Aviles wrote.

Katty Delgado, Aviles' half-sister, confirmed the release but said the specific conditions were not yet known. The Department of Homeland Security has not responded to requests for comment.

The incident occurs amid heightened immigration enforcement actions that have included the detention of other military family members, such as the recent deportation of an active-duty soldier's spouse who entered the country illegally in 2016.
