China condemns new U.S. sanctions targeting Iran and its trade partners

सारांश

China said it will defend its interests against what it called illegal unilateral U.S. sanctions on Iran, while U.S. Treasury officials warned of broader financial penalties for countries continuing the trade.

China’s foreign ministry said it will take "all necessary measures" to protect its rights after the United States announced plans to expand sanctions on Iran and entities that trade with Tehran, including Chinese firms. Spokesman Lin Jian called the measures "illegal unilateral sanctions" and asserted that cooperation between China and Iran is conducted under international law and should not be disrupted.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the new package as the "single greatest financial offensive ever" against Iran and warned that banks and businesses that do not cease dealings with Tehran could face isolation. He added that no one is exempt from U.S. sanctions and indicated that President Donald Trump would contact world leaders with requests to end interactions with Iran.

The announcement precedes a scheduled meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Analysts noted that the impact on Iran’s oil revenues may be limited, given that about 90% of its exports go to China, a country that has historically not recognized U.S. sanctions. Capital Economics economist David Oxley said the measures are likely to have only a modest short-term effect on Iranian energy flows.

Iranian officials said the country is prepared for the sanctions and has a two-year plan to manage them. The United States has labeled the initiative "Operation Economic Outcast" and an "economic D-Day" against Iran, aiming to further restrict the nation’s ability to finance its activities.
