Sandra Bullock says children handled partner Bryan Randall's ALS diagnosis differently

Résumé

The actress explained on a podcast that her son and daughter set their own boundaries while caring for Randall during his ALS illness, and she sought professional help for them.

Sandra Bullock said her two children, son Louis, 16, and daughter Laila, 12, responded to partner Bryan Randall’s ALS diagnosis in distinct ways. Both were fully aware of his condition, which she described as “completely aware,” because Randall lived in a separate part of the home and was cared for by nurses.

Bullock told the "SmartLess" podcast that Louis recognized the situation was unhealthy for him two years before Randall’s death and chose to step back, saying, "this is a safer space for me to sit." She added, "> So, he’s very evolved. He’s like, ‘You know what? I’m here for you.’ I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time."

She said she felt guilty about the shift in responsibility, noting that Louis "chose to just be there, and support and help me on the things that were easy for me."

Laila, according to Bullock, remained close to Randall until about six months before his death, after which she asked to be excused from visits. Bullock responded, "> And then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely,’" adding that she would accompany her if she chose to go.

Bullock arranged for Randall’s quarters to be separate from her children’s rooms and hired a child psychologist to help them process the illness. Randall, a photographer who met Bullock in 2015, died on Aug. 5, 2023, at age 57 after three years with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease with no cure.

Bullock said she began grieving several years before Randall’s death, noting that "my person left a lot earlier than the body left," and that she only confided in close friends after keeping the diagnosis private at his request.
