Canada to Detail Retaliatory Tariffs Amid Escalating Trade Dispute with United States

Resumen

Canada plans to announce counter-tariffs on U.S. goods after Washington imposed 50% duties on several Canadian products, intensifying a trade disagreement between the two nations.

Canada said it will unveil details of retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, following a sharp deterioration in bilateral trade relations after Washington announced new 50% duties on Canadian wine, furniture, dairy, automobiles, trucks, auto parts and steel. President Donald Trump warned Canadian officials to align with U.S. trade demands, stating that non-compliance would lead to consequences beyond the existing tariffs.

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded that the United States is seeking to treat Canada as a subordinate partner and asserted that Canada will only negotiate as a sovereign nation. He indicated that Canada is prepared to match Washington's new tariffs "dollar for dollar" to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.

The U.S. tariffs, affecting roughly $20 billion in Canadian exports, are set to rise to 50% on vehicle-related imports beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Canada’s counter-tariffs on U.S. steel, electronics and other products are expected to take effect on Sept. 8.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that all options remain on the table if the trade dispute continues, noting that Canadians may face economic challenges as a result.
