Target withdraws clown Halloween costume after criticism it resembled racist imagery

Summary

Target said it has removed a kids' clown Halloween costume from its stores after backlash that the outfit evoked blackface and minstrel show stereotypes, apologizing for the product.

Target announced on Monday that it has discontinued a children’s Halloween costume featuring a circus clown after the item drew criticism on social media for resembling racist caricatures associated with blackface and minstrel shows. The costume, marketed as the “Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,” was sold under the retailer’s seasonal Hyde and EEK Boutique brand.

"As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry," Target said in a statement. "The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale."

The retailer said it is reviewing the approval process for the product and will implement changes to prevent similar issues. The incident follows previous criticism of Target’s handling of its 2023 Pride Collection and recent adjustments to its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Some shoppers expressed disappointment, linking the controversy to the company’s recent DEI policy changes. Analysts noted that while Target has posted strong quarterly results and a rising share price, missteps in product selection could pose reputational risks.

Target’s shares rose 2.7% in afternoon trading following the announcement.
