Target withdraws controversial clown costume after criticism
Target has removed a Halloween clown outfit that drew criticism for resembling blackface, apologizing and saying it will review its product approval process.
Target announced it has pulled a children’s Halloween costume featuring a circus clown design after the item sparked criticism on social media for evoking blackface and 19th-century minstrel imagery. The retailer said the product, sold under its seasonal Hyde and EEK Boutique brand, should never have been offered.
"As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment," Target said in a statement.
The company added that the removal is "an important first step" and that it will examine how the item entered its assortment and what changes are needed to prevent similar incidents. Target also said the mistake was especially hurtful for its Black guests, employees and partners.
The incident follows previous controversies involving Target’s handling of its Pride Collection and its diversity, equity and inclusion policies, which have drawn scrutiny from consumers and advocacy groups.
