Prosecution questions expert on postpartum psychosis in Lindsay Clancy murder trial

摘要

During a rebuttal phase of the trial, prosecutors challenged a defense expert on whether Lindsay Clancy exhibited signs of postpartum psychosis, a key element of her insanity defense.

Prosecutors continued presenting rebuttal witnesses Monday in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother charged with strangling her three children in 2023. The defense maintains that Clancy was not criminally responsible because she suffered postpartum psychosis, a claim the state must refute to overcome the insanity defense.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington resumed cross-examination of Dr. Avram Mack, who had reviewed the case and relevant statutes. Reddington focused on whether Mack observed any indications of psychosis in Clancy’s behavior. Mack testified that he interviewed Clancy in April and concluded she did not meet criteria for bipolar disorder, diagnosing her instead with major depressive disorder. He said her mental state, though troubled for months, allowed her to control her behavior and that he found no evidence of psychosis or delusions in her records. > "I don’t see any signs of psychosis or delusions," Mack told the jury.

Outside the courthouse, supporters of the children gathered, wearing white to honor the victims. The trial, which began July 20, also includes testimony from other experts who have described Clancy’s severe depression, anxiety, and alleged auditory hallucinations on the day of the killings. The jury, composed of twelve women and six men, will consider whether Clancy retained substantial capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of her conduct and to conform to the law, as required by Massachusetts legal standards.

Clancy remains incarcerated at Tewksbury State Hospital while the case proceeds, and the judge is reviewing motions regarding additional defense witnesses.
