Browns evaluate quarterback options as Deshaun Watson faces fan backlash

Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken is expected to name the team’s starting quarterback on Monday following a preseason game in which quarterback Deshaun Watson was booed by fans. Watson, who signed the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history after the Browns traded for him, has faced criticism for his on-field performance and off-field controversies.

An independent arbitrator previously ruled that Watson committed sexual assault under the NFL’s definition and noted a lack of expressed remorse. Watson has publicly stated he has no regrets and does not require counseling. He also suffered a torn Achilles two years ago, an injury that sidelined him for the season.

Monken praised Watson’s work ethic during the preseason, saying, "> All I’ve seen from him is a player that’s worked awfully hard to get back to where he is now and given himself a chance to compete at the highest level. I’ve been really pleased with how he’s worked, how he’s approached every day."

The Browns are also considering rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders as an alternative option. The organization is navigating contract considerations and future revenue plans, including the upcoming sale of personal seat licenses for a new stadium slated to open in 2029.
