National Treasure 3 confirmed by director after two decades
Director Jon Turteltaub announced that Disney is moving forward with a third National Treasure film, aiming to bring back the original cast including Nicolas Cage.
Director Jon Turteltaub told listeners of the National Treasure Hunt podcast in Philadelphia that a third installment of the franchise is officially in development. He said the project has a script he likes and that Disney has indicated it is a film they can produce.
Turteltaub expressed hope of reuniting the original cast, adding that Nicolas Cage and other returning actors will be involved "to whatever extent we can."
The first National Treasure film, released in 2004, starred Cage as historian Benjamin Gates and earned $347.5 million worldwide against a $100 million budget despite mixed reviews. Its 2007 sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, grossed $459.2 million globally but received lower critical scores.
The series was revived in 2022 with the Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History, featuring a new lead character while retaining several actors from the films.
