Wyndham Clark wins BMW Championship for third title of the year
Wyndham Clark rallied on the back nine at Bellerive to finish three shots ahead, earning his third victory of the season and moving into the top six for the Presidents Cup.
Wyndham Clark captured the BMW Championship on Sunday at Bellerive Country Club, posting an even-par 70 that secured a three-shot win over Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay. After losing a five-shot lead early in the final round, Clark hit a decisive 5-iron birdie on the 16th hole and followed with two more birdies to seal the victory, his third on the PGA Tour this year.
"I know everyone maybe gives me a hard time and roots for other people," Clark said, adding that the win marked his best season after a difficult previous year.
McIlroy finished third with a 69 and acknowledged his own missed opportunity.
"I always felt like I needed to just get my nose ahead to really try to put the pressure on Wyndham, and I couldn’t," he said.
Runner-up Patrick Cantlay posted a 68, moving into the top 30 of the FedEx Cup standings and positioning himself for the Tour Championship. Gary Woodland, who returned to the top 30, tied for fourth with a 69 after a challenging round.
Clark’s victory also placed him among the six automatic qualifiers for the Presidents Cup, joining Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Russell Henley, Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa.
