Browns coach Monken says starting quarterback will be announced Monday
Coach Todd Monken told reporters the Cleveland Browns will name their starting quarterback on Monday, noting that recent comments from Deshaun Watson will not influence the decision.
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken announced that the team will designate its starting quarterback on Monday, according to a Zoom press conference on Sunday. Monken said he still has a few factors to consider but expects to make the decision the next day.
He added that quarterback Deshaun Watson’s post-game remarks on Saturday about being booed by fans will not affect the choice. When asked about possible negative fan reactions for the Week 3 home opener, Monken replied, "I’m not concerned about that. What I’m concerned about is us playing well, as a team and on offense. Because when you play well, none of the other stuff matters."
Monken indicated that the decision will be based on football performance rather than external pressures. The Browns have a preseason game scheduled for Thursday night, after which the starting quarterback will be set for the regular season.
