Browns face decision on Deshaun Watson's future amid contract and performance concerns
Cleveland evaluates whether to retain quarterback Deshaun Watson, whose $230 million contract and on-field results have drawn criticism, as the team plans its roster and salary-cap strategy.
Cleveland Browns officials are weighing options regarding quarterback Deshaun Watson as the franchise approaches the 2024 season. Watson, who signed a five-year, $230 million deal in 2022, has posted a 9-10 record as a starter with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His passer rating ranks 42nd among quarterbacks with at least 500 attempts since 2022, according to publicly available statistics.
If the Browns were to release Watson before the season, the move would generate $127 million in dead-money cap charges, including $41 million against the 2024 cap and $86 million in 2027. The team currently lacks sufficient cap space, meaning any release would require restructuring other contracts.
Watson addressed the media after a preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills, stating that criticism of his performance is "personal" and describing it as "disrespectful." He also said he does not regret signing with Cleveland.
The organization has also been dealing with off-field issues related to Watson, including a past legal settlement, an 11-game suspension and a $5 million fine. Those matters have contributed to ongoing scrutiny from fans and media.
Analysts note that the Browns hold multiple first-round draft picks and may consider targeting a quarterback in the 2027 draft. The team’s recent defensive performance, including a trade involving a former Defensive Player of the Year, adds further complexity to the quarterback decision.
The Browns’ front office has not announced a definitive plan, and Watson remains under contract for the upcoming season.
